Fashion of the Times Essay - 1722 Words

Before America was America, and before the settlers had their colonies, the people that were to become the first residents of Jamestowne wore clothes of the Queen. No, they didn’t wearing the clothing made by the Queen or for the Queen, nor did they wear the clothes straight off her back. The Elizabethan style, named after the Queen Elizabeth, is simply the clothing that came into style when she became heir. The original settlers of Jamestown, though under the reign of Queen Elizabeth’s cousin and heir- James I, the fashion they wore was still that of the Elizabethan era. During the Elizabethan Era, a law was instated called Sumptuary Law that limited the range of clothing the male and female residents could wear. As Smith said, As at this time were most of our chiefest men either sicke or discontented, the rest being in such dispaire, as they would rather starve and rot with idleness, then be persuaded to do any thing for their owne reliefe without constraint.... It probably wasn’t the lone fact that the residents were stuck with all work and very little play that had them in such a depressed state. The appointed leaders, in which John Smith called the council, forbid the use of weaponry for the â€Å"presidents overweening jealousy would not admit [it].† That decision later left even more settlers, who had not already died from famine or disease, die from attacks from an enemy. The president also forbid there to be any sex between unmarried folks, and since none of these men came to the land with their wives- or any women to be exact, this law is probably to limit the amount of relationships the settlers had with the women of the Native tribes. Of those native tribes, the Powhatans were the settler’s closes neighbors.
